Tularaemia is an infection which spreads from animals to humans, causing an acute, febrile, granulomatous infection. Common symptoms include ulceration, swollen lymph nodes, bodyache, fever, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting, pneumonia and septicemia.
The Ayurvedic treatment of tularemia is aimed at treating the symptoms and preventing complications like pneumonia, typhoid and kidney failure. Medicines like Sukshma-Triphala, Triphala-Guggulu, Gandhak-Rasayan, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Saarivadi-Churna and Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha are used to treat the basic infection and ulceration. Local applications can be made using medicines like Panch-Tikta-Ghrut, Yashtimadhuk-Ghrut and Shatadhout-Ghrut. An ointment containing Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Chandan (Santalum album) and Mandukparni (Centella asiatica) can also be used for this purpose.
Medicines like Arogya-Vardhini, Chandraprabha-Vati and Kachnaar-Guggulu can be used to treat lymphadenopathy. Gastrointestinal infection, ulceration and bleeding can be treated using medicines like Ras-Parpati, Kutaj-Parpati, Panchamrut-Parpati, Bilva-Avaleha, Kutajarishta, Sutshekhar-Ras, Praval-Panchamrut-Bhasma, Shankh-Vati, Vishwa (Zinziberis) Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica), Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea), Laxa (Purified wax) and Sphatik-Bhasma. Lung infection can be treated using medicines like Yashtimadhuk, Pippali (Piper longum), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa), Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa), Shrung-Bhasma, Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur and Sameer-Pannag- Ras. Impending kidney failure can be prevented using medicines like Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Chandraprabha-Vati, Punarnavadi-Qadha and Gomutra-Haritaki. Meningitis can be prevented using medicines like Ekang-Veer-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Kaishor-Guggulu and Tapyadi-Loh. Endocarditis can be treated using medicines like Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Sukshma-Triphala, Arjunarishta, Drakshasav, Dashmoolarishta, Laxmi-Vilas-Ras and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani-Ras.
Most patients affected with tularemia recover within a few weeks to a few months. Ayurvedic medicines can be given in addition to standard antibiotics in order to speed up the recovery process and prevent serious complications. It is important to adopt appropriate preventive measures for this condition.
